Fall Registration is Now Open

— Students can enroll in courses through April 17

After the April 17 registration deadline, FAS registration for returning students will close until the open add/drop period begins on August 19.
Review student registration timeline

Fall registration lasts for two weeks.
Here's what to expect

Returning students will register for fall courses from April 3–17
Advising Holds
If you are an advisor, schedule meetings with students and lift their advising holds. You can continue to meet with students throughout registration. Remind them of other holds that might prevent registration.
Limited Enrollment Courses
Petitions: Be sure to review and process petitions in time for students to enroll. Students can still submit petitions even if they have a hold. Holds must be removed for students to enroll in courses.

New for Fall 2024: Canceling Approved Petitions

Instructors can cancel approved petitions for students who have not enrolled in a class. If a student does not accept a seat by a course’s set deadline, you may reallocate their seat.
Deadlines for limited enrollment courses:
  • April 9: Deadline for students to petition for limited enrollment courses. Students can still petition even if they have a registration hold.
  • April 10: Notify students who received a seat in your course.
  • April 11: Deadline for students to accept seats in lotteried Gen Ed courses. Other departments with limited enrollment courses may decide their own deadline by which students must claim seats.
Waitlists: Decide whether you will offer a waitlist before the add/drop period opens on August 19. Connect with your curriculum coordinator about adding a waitlist to your class.
Sectioning
Key points to keep in mind when choosing your sectioning plan:
  • Describe your sectioning plan and timeline to students in my.harvard and/or on your Canvas site so they know what to expect.
  • If you plan to use the my.harvard sectioning tool, students must submit time preferences before registration closes
  • If you have questions or need training on the my.harvard sectioning tool, please contact courses@fas.harvard.edu

Harvard College Simultaneous Enrollment Policy

Undergraduate students may not enroll in courses, sections, or labs that meet at the same time or at overlapping times, but there are two possible exceptions. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that meeting times do not overlap.
Cross Registration at Harvard Divinity School for FAS Students
FAS students can cross register for courses at the Harvard Divinity School now. Other Harvard schools and MIT will open cross registration in August or September. Students should check the relevant school calendars for details.
Cross Registration into FAS Courses for non-FAS Students
Harvard Divinity School and Harvard Graduate School of Design students may register for FAS courses in April. Other students outside of FAS will not register for FAS courses until registration opens for their schools.
Tentative Fall 2024 Exam Schedule
Please note the posted Fall 2024 exam schedule is tentative until registration and add/drop closes. We will communicate the final Fall 2024 schedule by the third week of the fall term.
Once fall registration closes, courses can make section adjustments.
It is critical that accurate enrollment sections are reflected in my.harvard by Friday, April 26 so that other courses have full access to student schedule information:
  • For their own sectioning process
  • So that teaching support and classrooms may be assigned accurately

In August, open add/drop begins and incoming students register.

Open Add/Drop and Waitlists open on August 19. Students will be able to adjust their schedules without instructor permission.

Cross Registration at MIT and other Harvard Schools
