Plan ahead for fall registration

Registration is less than one month away. It's important to plan ahead so you can manage your spring term coursework while also registering for your fall semester.

 Important Dates:

  • March 27: Fall 2024 Crimson Cart and Course Search Open
  • April 3: Fall Registration Opens
  • April 9: Limited enrollment course petitions due
  • April 17: Fall Registration Closes

May and November Graduates and Master's in Passing

Students completing a Master’s in Passing should register for fall courses.

Students graduating in May and November 2024 do not need to register for fall courses. The May 2024 degree application is now open, and November degree application opens on March 20. It‘s critical that you apply to graduate as soon as possible so you are not prompted to register for fall. You will no longer receive registration reminders after you apply to graduate.

Prepare for registration with the checklist below:

Schedule a meeting with your advisor.

Advising Holds: Meet with your advisor before you plan to register

Once the course search is available on March 27 and you have a tentative course plan for fall, meet with your advisor to talk about your schedule.
  • You can submit petitions for instructor permission if you have a hold, but your holds must be lifted before you can register for courses and accept a seat for a limited enrollment course.
Check if you have any holds now and continue to check up until registration opens.

Visit my.harvard to see what holds may prevent you from registering for courses. Some holds such as financial and immunization are visible now. Other holds will be added on a rolling basis.

 Holds and Petitions:

You can still submit petitions if you have a hold, but the hold must be lifted for you to enroll.

All holds must be lifted for you to enroll in courses by the April 17 deadline.

  • Harvard University Health Services (HUHS)/Immunization (visible now): You must be compliant with all vaccines to register. The Registrar's Office cannot lift this hold from your record. HUHS places and removes holds for students needing to provide documentation of their immunization records.  Check your immunization compliance status in the HUHS Patient Portal

  • Financial (impacting both registration and start of term; visible now): Tied to any balance related to the current term bill or recent charges

  • Advising (visible March 27): You’ll need to meet with your advisor this spring before enrolling in fall courses. Your advisor releases this hold by virtually signing your crimson cart.

Consider whether you will register for limited enrollment courses

Key deadlines for limited enrollment courses:

  • April 9: Deadline for students to petition for limited enrollment courses. You can still petition even if you have a registration hold.
  • April 10: Limited enrollment course notifications released.
Departments with limited enrollment courses may decide their own deadline by which students must claim seats—review each course’s description and Canvas site for details or contact the instructor.

 Important:

Beginning with Fall 2024 Registration, instructors can cancel approved petitions for students who have not enrolled in a class and are not on the waitlist for a class. This means if you do not accept your seat by a course’s set deadline, your seat may be reallocated to another student. It’s important to be aware of individual courses’ deadlines.
Review information about cross registration; open add/drop period; waitlists
Cross registration:
  • If you plan to cross register at another school or are in an interfaculty program, you will need to register for courses through two distinct processes (during FAS Fall registration and during other schools' registration)
  • Cross registration for the Harvard Divinity School opens April 3. Please do not register for placeholder courses– Harvard Griffin GSAS students will not be penalized for not completing full-time registration in April. Late enrollment fees will be applied when fall term begins for those not enrolled.
Open Add/Drop Period:
  • You will be able to freely adjust your fall schedule when add/drop period opens on August 19—September 10.
  • Instructor permission is needed to add courses beginning September 11.
Waitlists:
  • If a course chooses to offer a waitlist, you may add yourself to the waitlist when the add/drop period opens on August 19.
