Double Concentrations Are Now Live

Keep reading for program and advising information as well as training materials and additional resources.
Dear <<First Name>>,

In the Spring of 2022, the Faculty voted on legislation to allow students to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a double concentration, and we’d like to share steps the Registrar’s Office is taking to support this endeavor and future projects.

Declaration of Concentration:
Students who have declared a single concentration and are adding a second concentration need to fill out the form found on the Registrar's Office website and obtain appropriate signatures from the new concentration. Students who meet the following conditions must complete the form above and obtain signatures from both concentrations:

  • Changing from a joint concentration to double concentration or
  • Declaring a concentration for the first time as a third semester sophomore
Current timeframe: We will manually process the forms within 3-5 business days and will email the student once it is processed.

Future process: We are working with the HUIT team to update the my.harvard Declaration of Concentration tool to include double concentrations.

How do you know if a student is a double concentrator?  Navigate to the Academic Program tab in my.harvard to see the details of the double concentration.

If you have an adviser role, you can enter “double concentration” in the student search field in the Teaching/Advising tab to see double concentrators.

Pursuing Honors as a Double Concentrator
As stated in the Harvard College Student Handbook, students can only designate honors in one concentration. Although pursuing honors is not required, students may indicate if they are pursuing honors in one of their concentrations on the Declaration of Double Concentration form

In the future, this designation will be added to the electronic Declaration of Concentration tool and will be routed to your department for approval.

Using my.harvard for Double Concentration Advising

Academic Advising Report:
The two concentrations cannot have significant overlap. As an advisor, you can use the AAR to check the 8 credit limit of double counted courses. Please read more about the Academic Advising Report on our website. If you need a refresher on the AAR, please attend the AAR Training session on October 4th at 2:00pm.

Advising Network Committee:
An overnight process in my.harvard updates students’ advising network with the appropriate concentration committee. However if there is a need for  one to one advisor assignments, they will need to updated by the concentration. Please see more on Updating Advising Committees and review the instructions on Accessing a Student’s Advising Network in my.harvard to make sure advising committees are showing as expected.

What-If? Report:
The What-If report allows students and advisors to visualize how potential coursework will help satisfy degree requirements based on concentration selection(s). The What-If? Report has been updated to support those exploring the possibility of pursuing a double concentration.

Search By My Requirements (SBR):
The Search By My Requirements tool allows students to search for course offerings that will satisfy unmet requirements. The SBR has been updated to support course search for double concentrators.

Graduation Tracker:
As stated in the Harvard College Student Handbook, "Departmental honors are determined solely by the designated honors field.” Graduation Tracker is used by concentrations to submit degree and honors recommendations for students expected to graduate. We hope to update this tool to include double concentrators before April 6th for May 2023 degree candidates.
