Prepare for Spring Final Exams

— Review exam dates, location, and policies.

Before you take your exams, be aware of the guidelines about academic integrity and what to do if something goes wrong, such as if you get sick on the day of your exam.
Re-read the Honor Code
Dear <<First Name>>,

As you prepare for final assignments, I write to remind you about the policies and procedures associated with the Final Examination period, beginning on Thursday, May 5.

Exam period can be busy and stressful, but remember that you always have resources and advisers who can help – please don’t hesitate to reach out for support.
SUPPORT THROUGHOUT EXAMS
  • Have an adviser, family member, tutor/proctor, faculty member or staff member in mind whom you can call when things get toughest.
  • Ask for help and communicate with faculty and advisers as soon as possible when things come up.
  • If in doubt, reach out to your Resident Dean or First-Year Resident Dean between now and the end of the semester. They can help you figure out your options and solve problems.
Please take some time to fully review the policies and tips included below – the following information may save you time and reduce stress during the exam period.

Wishing you a successful end of term,

Mike Burke
Acting Associate Dean for Academic Integrity and Student Conduct
Registrar of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University

EXAM HELP AND TIPS

Before an Exam

REVIEW POLICIES
Understand 2021-22 extensions of time policy
If you encounter unexpected difficulties in completing your work, you should consult your Resident Dean. Extensions of time up to the end of the Examination Period may be granted by your instructor, but extensions beyond the Examination Period can be granted only by vote of the Administrative Board.

Re-read the Honor Code.
Remember that it is ok to be unsure about some of your exam answers and that it's ok to not to be able to answer every question.

Review the Examination Rules.
Know what is permitted during your exam.

CHECK DATES
Review your final exam dates and locations
Do not miss the scheduled time of your exam. Know the dates and locations (they will probably be different from where you have class) and add them to your calendar or planner.

Re-read the syllabus for each of your courses.
Know the deadlines for any final assignments and understand the collaboration policy for the course.

Check the time and location for your out of sequence exam if you have one.
If you are scheduled for an out of sequence exam, please note the time and location may be different from the main exam. Please review your exam details in the emails from exams@harvard.fas.edu.

24 Hours Before an Exam

KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET SICK
If you are sick during the 24 hours before your exam, call HUHS Urgent Care
Explain that you are unwell and scheduled to take an exam within the next 24 hours. If you are instructed to go to HUHS Urgent Care, make sure to  request a medical make-up form. Let your Resident Dean know you will miss your exam and give them the make-up form so they can help you with the make-up exam process.

If you test positive for COVID-19 or are in quarantine/isolation and you will miss your exam please contact your instructor to inquire if there is an alternate exam arrangement that can be made. If there is no option for an alternative exam please speak with your Resident Dean who can guide you in petitioning the Ad Board for a makeup exam.

PREPARE TO WAKE UP ON TIME
Create a back up plan to wake up.
Set a second alarm (or a few!). Ask someone to call or check on you to make sure you're awake. If you oversleep, contact your Resident Dean immediately.

Get plenty of sleep.
Don't try to stay up all night and risk sleeping through your exam.

Double check your exam time/location.
Make sure you know where you are going.

During an Exam

KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET SICK
If you are sick during your exam, immediately let your instructor know.
You are required to call HUHS Urgent Care (617-495-5711) to let them know you are leaving your exam due to illness.
  • If you are too sick to go to HUHS on your own, your instructor will contact someone from HUPD to accompany you.
  • Once you arrive at Urgent Care, you are not permitted to communicate with anyone except your health care providers until you are able to resume your exam, and you will be directed to contact your Resident Dean about your illness.
  • When you resume your exam, you will only be allowed the balance of time remaining to finish it.
FOLLOW EXAM POLICIES
Arrive on time!
You may not be allowed to take an exam if you arrive late, and you will definitely not be allowed to take the exam if you arrive after the first student has left the room.

Follow the Honor Code.
Cheating on exams or problem sets, plagiarizing or misrepresenting the ideas or language of someone else as one’s own, falsifying data, or any other instance of academic dishonesty violates the standards of our community.

Sit through the exam, even if it is not worth a large part of your grade.
If a course has a final exam, then you are required to take it  in order to pass the course (or arrange for a make-up exam).
