Dear <<First Name>>,
As your department prepares for the Fall 2022 term, here are a few things to keep in mind.
COURSE SEARCH OPENS
Students can browse AY 22-23 classes in Course Search starting June 6. Departments should stop using Course Search Preview on this date.
August 3 is the deadline to enter edits on the Course Catalog page in my.harvard. After this date, departments may only continue to edit:
- Class times
- Instructors (roles and grade access)
- Class notes

FAS SCHEDULE COMPLIANCE
Departments are responsible for complying with the faculty legislation on the schedule. Check times and meeting patterns for compliance with the FAS schedule. In mid-June, the Registrar's Office will email departments who have non-compliant meeting times.
Departments should comply with the schedule year-round. To check a department's schedule compliance, please use the new course balance tool. Guidelines on how to use the tool can be found here.
Reminders:
- FAS classes that physically reside on the FAS campus must adhere to the FAS schedule. Requests for FAS spaces are contingent on FAS compliant times.
- If an FAS class will physically reside on another campus (e.g. HDS, MIT) please follow p. 20 of the Curriculum Management Workflows to update the campus field in my.harvard.
- Gen Ed classes must be balanced within the course offerings of the faculty members’ home department. Ex: if a NELC faculty member is teaching a new Gen Ed course, that course’s meeting pattern must be considered among all of NELC’s offerings to avoid content overlap. Note balancing rules apply to courses that meet 2-3 times per week (time balancing, 9am-4pm inclusive) per the FAS Schedule Legislation.
- All scheduled discussion and lab sections must adhere to the faculty legislated start and end times; however, they are exempt from the balancing rules.
Unbalanced Schedules
Departments without balanced schedules will not be able to request room preferences until their Fall schedule has been balanced.
ACTION ITEM
Don't forget about the Have You Considered (HYC) feature available in my.harvard. HYC allows undergraduate students to discover new FAS classes, electives, and disciplines, or find classes on innovative or timely topics. After June 6 you can add the attribute to your schedule of classes for AY 22-23.
Tag Have You Considered? Classes
- Determine which classes to advertise
Coordinate with your curriculum committee / DUS / Chair to select up to 5 classes per term to highlight to undergraduates via HYC.
- Tag HYC classes
Once your department has selected HYC classes, you can tag the course using the HYC attribute in the schedule of classes.
Only tag the course with HYC in the schedule of classes.
